A wild leopard attacked five people on a three-hour rampage in the eastern Indian city of Guwahati, killing one man before being tranquilized by authorities.

Residents told AP the leopard attacked a 50-year-old lawyer as he talked on his cellphone. He was rushed to a hospital where he died Sunday.

Witnesses told the Calcutta Telegraph that unruly crowds cornered and threatened the leopard, which may have provoked it.

Manas Paran, a local newspaper photographer, recounted the attack. After mauling a cook (who had part of his scalp torn off, seen in these pictures), the leopard jumped walls and wandered to other homes in the crowded neighborhood. At one point Paran saw a man chasing the leopard with a metal rod. Despite his warnings, the man continued and then the leopard attacked.

“I was worried that it would turn on me. My heart was thumping and hands were shaking; I was terrified,” Paran told the Telegraph.

Wildlife officials eventually tranquilized the leopard and planned to release it at a wildlife park 120 miles west of the city home to around 1 million.

The best seats in the house for today's spectacular were in Asia. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon is positioned just right in its orbit to pass through Earth's shadow. Today, that occurred when Asia and the Pacific were facing right at the moon. Other regions of the world, including some areas of Europe and the western U.S. and Canada, could catch at least part of the show before sunrise or after sunset. Here's a sampling of the snapshots:

The Associated Press reports from TOKYO:

 An outing of luxury sportscar enthusiasts in Japan ended in an expensive freeway pileup — smashing a stunning eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini and two Mercedes likely worth more than $1 million together.

Police say they believe the accident Sunday was touched off when the driver of one of the Ferraris tried to change lanes and hit the median barrier. He spun across the freeway, and the other cars collided while trying to avoid hitting his car.

Video of the crash aired by NTV, a major national network, showed several smashed, bright red Ferraris cluttering the freeway.

No one was seriously injured, but police in Yamaguchi prefecture said 10 people were treated for bruises and cuts. Police say 14 cars were involved altogether. Read the full story.

Traffic police spokesman Mitsuyoshi Isejima called the event "a gathering of narcissists," according to Bloomberg.  He said the drivers were aged between 37 and 60 years old.

Today was a very rare chance to see inside the grounds of Fukushima's Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. It was the first time that the media was allowed access to the site since March, when the earthquake and tsunami triggered explosions and the reactors began to melt down.

A group of about 50 or more journalists was allowed to go in Saturday. I was the only non-Japanese photographer. We had to put on white haz-mat protective suits, two pairs of gloves, double layers of thick white plastic booties over our shoes, a head cover and a full respirator mask. Officials covered my cameras with plastic bags. I wasn't going to be able to change the settings on my cameras, change the batteries and memory cards, or switch lenses once the bags were sealed shut.

We boarded two buses and drove past a police checkpoint and into the "exclusion zone"— a 20-kilometer-radius contaminated no-man's land surrounding the destroyed power plant. Everything looks like a ghost town inside the zone. Earthquake rubble still lies in piles. Vending machines sit idle. We saw a pachinko pinball parlor with its front wall caved in. Overgrown weeds and creeping grasses have begun to reclaim abandoned parking lots and sidewalks. Stray cows, dogs and cats still wandered around and crows picked through garbage. The radiation meters showed between 1 and 7 microsieverts here.

Guards in protective suits checked our buses and waved us through the gate of Dai-ichi. Almost immediately I could see the stacks and ravaged exterior of one of the units. From a distance we stopped the bus and photographed the plant. Japanese TV correspondents did their "stand-ups" wearing the full spacesuits from inside the bus. Then we drove remarkably close to the reactors.

The buses moved along a narrow street tightly squeezed between the outer wall of the building units and the sea. We were only about 20 yards from the plant wall. The place is devastated. Walls are sheared away. Overturned vehicles and twisted steel beams lie upside down in huge earthquake craters. Abandoned pump trucks, used in early efforts to cool the site, sit idle. Dozens of hoses snake across the ground and through open doors or ruptures in the walls. Everywhere, there are pools of water. Elsewhere on the grounds there were dozens of busy workers. But next to the reactors, there are no signs of life. The radiation meters showed 300 microsieverts even inside the bus.

It wasn't that easy to photogaph. We were not allowed to get out of the bus which kept moving. We probably had about 3 minutes in total to shoot while the bus rolled past, close to the plant. In fact, we were so close to the plant that my widest lens could only make a full frame of nothing but twisted debris.

We also visited an emergency operation center near the reactors. I think this place was actually more interesting than seeing the damaged reactor itself because it was here that I found the people. Inside was a giant planning room. On the walls were monitors showing live video feeds on flat screen TVs. Men in white suits and masks typed on computers and added figures on desk calculators. Workers rested on the floor against their lockers. Everyone looked a bit weary to me. 

I think everyone is wondering, "Who are these people who go to the plant each day to make a living and, on behalf of the country, to battle the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl?"

According to the Metro Transit Authority, the ridership for Grand Central Terminal in 2010 was 41,903,210. If all days had equal ridership in a year, that would be 114,803 people per day. According to Wikipedia: Puyehue and Cordón Caulle are two coalesced volcanic vents that form a major mountain massif in Puyehue National Park in the Andes of Ranco Province, Chile. In volcanology this group is known as the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex (PCCVC). Four different volcanoes constitute the volcanic group or complex, the Cordillera Nevada caldera, the Pliocene Mencheca volcano, Cordón Caulle fissure vents and the Puyehue stratovolcano.

So frequently when I see pictures from the Holy Week processions in Spain, the images focus on the hooded penitents, but I like it that the observers of the procession are the primary subject as they are caught in a moment of what reminds me of being late for church and trying to figure out how to find a seat without causing a ruckus.

I'm not sure who won, but I think the guy with the horse and saddle had the right idea.

Despite this picture coming from a celebration, I find it to be a little melancholy since we've seen the Reagans go from the image of strength and power to one of a couple of which one has passed and the other continues in the "sunset" of her life without her beloved Ronnie. All of that being said, how remarkable that Mrs. Reagan is still able to make public appearances at her age.

I thought these were both haunting images from photographer Claire Martin's series on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, B.C. Martin's description of the area follows below:

"This is Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, a place notorious for its residents who live below the poverty line in a city twice voted 'the world's most livable' by the Economist Magazine. Statistics for the suburb include and AIDS rate estimated at 30% and the leading cause of death as overdose. Addiction is the core problem causing women to sell sex in order to meet subsistence needs such as food and shelter. Living conditions are sub-standard with the norm consisting of small single-room accommodations that are ridden with bed bugs and multi-resistant staphylococcus. The media regularly makes rounds on the Downtown East Side, but it only serves to stigmatise the people. It is easy to forget that this is a real suburb home to real people who are suffering devastating loss of health and quality of life due to addiction."

I think this could quite possibly be the perfect picture of sledging, or sledding, if you prefer. Visions of Chevy Chase as Clark W. Griswold, Jr., in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" on his waxed saucer sled came to mind. In fact, this picture nearly perfectly matches a frame from the classic holiday flick. Argentine cowboys must stay on a horse for approximately 15 seconds compared to saddle bronc riders in the United States who only have to last for eight seconds. Either count would be a tough task.
